How Much is Your Wedding Photography?…Gulp!

The average amount a couple will spend on their wedding photographer is $2,659 with an additional $1,349 for a videographer, typically totaling more than $4,000, which can be a huge cut of any wedding budget. I only wish my Utah wedding photographer had been that much.  However, I was very fortunate, in that I had a renowned, charismatic photographer who delivered stunning photos of my big day. On the contrary, I have some close friends who were not quite as lucky; less than optimal photos with awkward faces, drab backgrounds, and funky style techniques (such as selective coloring) that made them look cheesy and amateur.

Thus leads me to a very crucial element in the wedding planning process: the selection of the perfect wedding photographer. Choosing the photog can be a very tricky thing, considering you will not see the final product or what you are actually paying for until after the fact; there are no re-takes for your wedding! So to make sure you pick the right one to ensure fab photos, keep in mind these tips:

- Request a portfolio or sample pics of the photographer’s work to get a sense of their ability and style. Look for things you like in the photos and if they connect with their subjects

- Make sure you feel at ease with the photographer; you want him or her to bring the best out in you and your guests and you want to be comfortable with while they are shooting some of the most intimate and emotional moments of your wedding.

- You get what you pay for! A cheaper photographer will most likely deliver cheap results.

- Give yourself ample time to find the one – you may have to go through several interviews before you find a photographer you want.
