Scary Seatbelt Statistics

James Madison University has posted these statistics. I found them very interesting and a little scary, to say the least.

  • One out of every five drivers will get into an accident this year. (This really scares me! I’ve been in one accident in my  life. It was pretty bad; it totaled my car and involved two other cars. I had a hard time sleeping a little while after it all happened. Be safe, everyone! No one wants to get into an accident.)
  • About 35,000 people die in car accidents every year. And of these 35,000 people,  50% could have been saved if they had worn their seatbelt. (This is even more terrifying than the last one. Why even take the chance of not wearing your seatbelt? It just seems so reckless and stupid.)
  • Nine out of ten people buckle up when asked. (This is good to know. If you are driving and your passengers aren’t wearing their seatbelts, just ask. More than likely, they will buckle up.)
  • Out of every 100 children that die in car accidents, 80 of them could have been saved if they were secured properly by their parents. (This is just so sad. I don’t understand those parents who don’t buckle up their children.)

Those are only a few of them.  But after reading all those statistics, it seems so crazy for people not to wear their seatbelts.  Now I sound like this is a campaign or something. Maybe they should hire me! :) But seriously, why take the chance? Just wear the seatbelt.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. children between the ages of 1 and 14. You should always wear your seat belt, not only to prevent injuries and death, but to set a good example for those around you! Please visit our website http://www.carolinaclicks.org and sign the guestbook on our parents or student page to pledge to wear your seatbelt every time you enter the car!
