Toss It: The Wastefulness of America

Usually I don’t think twice when I throw our half-eaten dinners down the sink and crush and grind the leftovers in the InSinkerator.  Until now.

• An estimated 25% of edible food in the U.S. is wasted or thrown away.
• 12% of food bought for home use by consumers is eventually thrown out.
• The average American household throws out approximately 500 pounds of food per year.
• Americans throw away nearly half the food they grow in gardens.
• 4.4 million apples are thrown away nearly every day.
